ISLAMABAD: Search and rescue operations are continuing on Pakistan’s Broad Peak in the Karakoram mountain range after a devastating avalanche struck an international mountaineering expedition attempting to summit the 8,051-metre peak.
Rescue teams have so far recovered the bodies of four climbers from the avalanche site, while efforts continue to locate the remaining missing members of the expedition. A total of 10 climbers were reported missing after the incident.
The ongoing search mission is being led by renowned Pakistani mountaineer Sirbaz Khan, who is coordinating rescue efforts in the challenging high-altitude conditions.
According to initial reports, the missing team includes climbers from the United States, Nepal, Oman, and Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi. The group was caught in a massive avalanche while attempting to ascend Broad Peak on Friday.
Rescue teams are facing difficult weather, deep snow, and dangerous terrain as they continue the operation. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of all the recovered victims, and the search for the remaining climbers remains underway.
Broad Peak, located in Pakistan’s Karakoram range near K2, is the world’s 12th-highest mountain and is considered one of the most technically demanding peaks for mountaineers.
