The 2026 Ballon d’Or nominations have sparked plenty of debate after Barcelona star Raphinha was left out of the 30-player shortlist, while Sadio Mané and Julián Quiñones were both included.

France Football announced the nominees on September 8, with several of the world’s biggest stars making the cut. Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham and defending champion Ousmane Dembélé are among the headline names.

Raphinha’s Absence Raises Eyebrows

One of the biggest talking points from the announcement was the absence of Raphinha.

The Brazilian winger enjoyed an impressive campaign with Barcelona, but his performances were not enough to earn him a place among the 30 nominees. His omission has surprised many football supporters, particularly given Barcelona’s strong season and Raphinha’s importance to the team.

Raphinha’s absence has also been highlighted alongside other notable omissions, including Barcelona midfielder Pedri.

The decision is likely to remain one of the most debated aspects of this year’s Ballon d’Or shortlist.

Sadio Mané Returns to the Shortlist

While Raphinha missed out, Sadio Mané was named among the 30 nominees.

The Al-Nassr forward is no stranger to the Ballon d’Or shortlist. Mané previously finished second in the 2022 Ballon d’Or, behind Karim Benzema.

His inclusion this year is notable because he plays outside Europe’s traditional top five leagues. His nomination demonstrates that performances in Saudi Arabia can still receive recognition on the global stage.

Julián Quiñones Also Nominated

Julián Quiñones is another surprise name on the 2026 shortlist.

The Al-Qadsiah forward has been rewarded with a place among the world’s 30 nominated players after his performances during the qualifying period. Like Mané, Quiñones plays in the Saudi Pro League, making their inclusion particularly interesting.

Reports have specifically highlighted Mané and Quiñones as two of the non-European-based players included alongside Lionel Messi, who plays for Inter Miami in MLS.

A Controversial 30-Man List

The Ballon d’Or shortlist has already generated discussion over who made the cut and who was left out.

Raphinha and Pedri are among the notable Barcelona absentees, while players such as Mané and Quiñones have secured nominations. The contrast has led to questions about the criteria used by voters and how performances across different leagues are being evaluated.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held in London on October 26, when the winner will finally be revealed.

With several major stars competing for the prize, the debate over the shortlist is likely to continue until the winner is announced.
