Manchester City secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the latest Manchester Derby at Old Trafford, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal.
The match took a dramatic turn in the 23rd minute when Manchester City were reduced to 10 men. Phil Foden was sent off after an incident involving Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.
Despite being a player down for more than an hour, City remained resilient and eventually found the breakthrough in the 60th minute. Haaland converted from a Josko Gvardiol cross to give City the lead.
The goal initially appeared to have been ruled out for offside, but a VAR review overturned the decision. Officials determined that Haaland was played onside by Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu, while Enzo Fernandez’s position did not constitute interference.
United pushed hard for an equaliser but were unable to find the breakthrough. Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both hit the woodwork as Manchester United came close to getting back into the match. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma also produced a crucial late save to preserve the victory.
The defeat leaves Manchester United with just four points from their opening four Premier League matches, while Manchester City moved to 12 points, level with Arsenal at the top of the table but behind on goal difference.
The result gives City a major boost under new manager Enzo Maresca, while United manager Michael Carrick faces renewed pressure after a difficult start to the campaign.
The derby also generated significant debate over the VAR decision that allowed Haaland’s goal to stand, with Carrick expressing strong frustration over the ruling after the match.
