Nicosia: The European Union has renewed its commitment to supporting peace efforts in Cyprus. EU Special Envoy Raffaele Fitto visited Nicosia on Friday for his first official trip since taking up the role.
Fitto met with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides to discuss the next phase of the UN-led peace process. He said the European Union wants to play a stronger and more active role in helping both sides move closer to a settlement.
According to Fitto, his visit is focused on listening to all parties and identifying practical ways the EU can support ongoing negotiations. He also confirmed that he will return to Cyprus in the coming months to continue the dialogue.
EU Sees Opportunity for Progress
Fitto said the timing of the visit is important because it comes shortly after UN Secretary-General António Guterres visited Cyprus. He believes continued cooperation could create new momentum for peace.
Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos described the meeting as productive. He said both sides discussed practical steps to keep negotiations moving forward.
Kombos also noted that stronger EU-Turkey relations could help encourage progress. He added that Cyprus has already shared new ideas and proposals aimed at accelerating the peace process.
Turkey’s Role Remains Crucial
The Cypriot government believes there is still room for progress. However, officials say any major breakthrough will depend on Turkey’s willingness to engage positively in future negotiations.
Later in the day, Fitto is expected to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. The discussions are part of the European Union’s wider effort to stay engaged with all parties involved.
The European Commission has once again confirmed its support for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation based on United Nations resolutions. Brussels says it remains ready to provide political and diplomatic support to help achieve a lasting settlement.
