US chipmaker Nvidia and Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries will jointly develop AI-powered robots for use in the shipbuilding industry, the Japanese company has announced.

The partnership was unveiled during a visit to Tokyo by Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang, highlighting growing collaboration between the two firms in industrial artificial intelligence.

The AI-driven robots are expected to help automate complex manufacturing tasks, improve productivity and enhance safety in shipyards, where labour shortages and rising production demands remain key challenges.

The initiative reflects Japan’s increasing adoption of advanced AI and robotics to modernise its industrial sector, while reinforcing Nvidia’s expanding role beyond semiconductor manufacturing into AI-powered industrial applications.

Further details, including the project’s timeline and deployment plans, have not yet been disclosed.
