Islamabad: The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), and the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network have launched the first ‘Shahkaar Fankaar Alumni Artist Showcase’, highlighting the artistic achievements of alumni of U.S. government-sponsored exchange programmes.

The inaugural exhibition opened on October 22 at a newly established gallery space at the USEFP building in Islamabad. The gallery will showcase the work and achievements of exchange programme alumni in the arts while celebrating decades of educational and cultural exchanges between Pakistan and the United States.

The first exhibition features a solo presentation by Lahore-based visual artist Minaa Haroon, an alumna of a U.S. Department of State exchange programme focused on cultural preservation.

Haroon’s work explores memory, identity and family lineage through inherited jewellery and accessories, beginning with pieces passed down from her mother. Her artistic approach reflects on how personal objects can preserve cultural histories and connect generations.

The exhibition opening was attended by Asma Rashid-Khan, Director of Satrang Gallery and programme advisor for the showcase, curator Sarah Rajper, representatives of the U.S. Department of State, members of Pakistan’s art community, exchange programme alumni and members of the diplomatic corps.

Speaking at the event, Heidi Smith, Director of Public Engagement at the U.S. Embassy Pakistan, highlighted the longstanding role of educational and cultural exchanges in strengthening ties between the two countries.

Smith said that exchanges have brought Americans and Pakistanis together as partners in learning, innovation and creativity, adding that Haroon’s work demonstrates how an international exchange experience can influence an artist’s vision and contribute to stronger U.S.-Pakistan relations.

She also presented Haroon with a Certificate of Recognition honoring her artistic excellence and achievements as an exchange programme alumna.

Haroon, who serves as Assistant Director (Fine Arts) at the Lahore Arts Council, travelled to the United States in April 2024 as a visiting scholar under the U.S. Government’s Cultural Preservation Professional Exchange Program.

Reflecting on the experience, Haroon said her time in the United States deepened her understanding of cultural inheritance. Visits to museums and galleries exposed her to different approaches to preserving, interpreting and carrying forward history and traditions.

USEFP Executive Director Dr. Peter K. Moran also marked the occasion through a written statement, describing cultural and educational exchanges as opportunities to challenge established perspectives and broaden horizons through the exchange of ideas and creative expression.

Three additional alumni artists are scheduled to present their work through solo exhibitions at the USEFP gallery in 2027, further expanding the platform for artists who have participated in U.S. exchange programmes.

Since its establishment in 1950, USEFP has facilitated educational and research exchanges involving thousands of Pakistanis and Americans, contributing to longstanding academic, professional and cultural connections between the two countries
