The US State Department has approved a potential $1.96 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia, saying the package will strengthen the Kingdom’s defence capabilities and support US strategic interests in the Gulf.

According to the State Department, the proposed sale advances Washington’s foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of Saudi Arabia, a major non-NATO ally, while promoting political stability and economic progress across the region.

The deal includes military equipment and support services intended to bolster Saudi Arabia’s ability to address current and future security threats.

The proposed sale will now be notified to the US Congress, which has the opportunity to review the transaction before it can proceed.

The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions, with the United States continuing to deepen security cooperation with its Gulf partners while seeking to reinforce regional stability.
