Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States and Iran are resuming diplomatic talks after he called off a planned new round of military strikes against Tehran. Trump described the renewed engagement as a “last chance” for Iran to reach an agreement that could help reopen the Strait of Hormuz to normal commercial shipping and address U.S. concerns over Tehran’s nuclear program. The renewed dialogue comes as Iranian officials maintain that their current diplomatic efforts are focused on consultations with neighboring countries rather than direct negotiations with Washington. The talks are widely viewed as crucial to reducing tensions after months of conflict and restoring cargo traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes, which carries a significant share of global oil and natural gas shipments.
