Lahore: A resolution has been submitted in the Punjab Assembly seeking a ban on social media accounts for children under the age of 16.
The resolution, moved by Punjab Assembly member Sarah Ahmad, states that safeguarding the physical, mental, psychological, and moral development of children under 16 is the state’s constitutional responsibility.
It argues that unrestricted social media use is exposing children to cyberbullying, online sexual exploitation, inappropriate content, and increasing mental health risks.
The resolution also notes that several countries have already introduced laws and age restrictions governing social media use by minors.
The Punjab Assembly has recommended that the federal government direct the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to require all social media platforms to implement a robust age verification system.
