The EU has joined the US-led “Operation Economic Outcast” campaign aimed at increasing financial pressure on Iran.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on US social media platform X, “The European Union has officially joined Operation Economic Outcast and we appreciate their strong and early stance.”
He said the US stands firm with our allies in seeking to prevent the Iranian government from using the global financial system “to fund its nuclear ambitions, weapons programs, and terror proxies.”
Bessent accused Tehran of using international financial channels to support its nuclear and weapons programmes, as well as groups the United States describes as terror proxies.
He said the pressure campaign would continue until Iran’s remaining financial lifelines are severed.
The European Union has said it would work with the United States, G7 members and other international partners to maintain pressure on Iran while also seeking de-escalation and regional stability.
