A new chapter in relations between Spain and the British overseas territory of Gibraltar began on Wednesday as border checks between the two were officially lifted, ending years of delays and political tension.

The move marks a significant breakthrough after lengthy negotiations aimed at improving cross-border travel and strengthening economic and social ties between Gibraltar and neighbouring Spain.

For decades, border controls have been a source of frustration for thousands of commuters, tourists and businesses that rely on the daily movement of people across the frontier.

The removal of routine checks is expected to ease travel, boost trade and encourage closer cooperation, while preserving the interests of both Gibraltar and Spain.

The agreement is widely seen as a milestone in post-Brexit relations, offering greater certainty for residents and businesses while opening a new era of cross-border cooperation.
