New York: Spain lifted the FIFA World Cup 2026™ trophy after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium, according to an official FIFA press release.
With the match goalless after 90 minutes, Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute to secure Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title and make history as the first nation to simultaneously hold both the FIFA World Cup™ and FIFA Women’s World Cup™ trophies.
FIFA said the 2026 edition concluded with a record-breaking tournament attendance of 6,810,966 spectators, making it the highest-attended FIFA World Cup in history. The expanded competition featured 48 teams and 104 matches, marking a new era for the global showpiece.
The final also featured the inaugural FIFA World Cup Topps Final Halftime Show, produced by Global Citizen and curated by Chris Martin. The performance included global music stars Madonna, Shakira, BTS, Justin Bieber, Burna Boy, Gustavo Dudamel, the New York Philharmonic, the PS 22 Chorus, and Coldplay.
FIFA also announced the tournament’s individual award winners, with Spain dominating the honours. Midfielder Rodri received the adidas Golden Ball Award, goalkeeper Unai Simón was named winner of the adidas Golden Glove Award, while defender Pau Cubarsí claimed the Young Player Award presented by Aramco.
According to FIFA’s official press release, the tournament set new benchmarks in attendance, competition format, and global entertainment, concluding with Spain’s historic triumph on football’s biggest stage.
