Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast another spell of monsoon rains across several parts of the country, warning of heavy downpours that may trigger flash floods, urban flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
According to the PMD advisory issued on Thursday, moist currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are penetrating the upper and central parts of the country, while a westerly wave is also expected to influence weather conditions.
The weather system is likely to bring widespread rain, windstorms and thunderstorms to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Balochistan over the next several days. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected in a number of districts.
The Met Office warned that intense rainfall may cause flash flooding in local streams and hill torrents, particularly in hilly areas, while urban flooding is possible in low-lying areas of major cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Peshawar.
Authorities have also cautioned that landslides could disrupt traffic in mountainous regions, including Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
The PMD has advised all relevant departments to remain on alert and urged the public, tourists and commuters to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain, stay away from flood-prone areas and follow official weather advisories.
