KP Local Government Elections: Election Commission Expected to Announce Schedule as Scrutiny of Candidates Tightens
PESHAWAR: Preparations for local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have gained momentum, with the Election Commission expected to announce the election schedule possibly later this week. Meanwhile, authorities are considering stricter scrutiny of candidates’ eligibility ahead of the polls.
According to sources, dozens of former local government representatives and new candidates could face disqualification in the upcoming elections following a detailed review of their legal and administrative records.
Sources said the eligibility of former local government representatives facing ongoing investigations by various government departments is being examined. The review will also include individuals against whom allegations have reportedly been established during departmental inquiries.
The proposed scrutiny process is expected to take into account various criminal cases and legal proceedings involving prospective candidates.
Sources further revealed that authorities are working on a policy concerning individuals facing allegations related to the Islamabad protests, the May 9 incidents, and other serious charges registered by police.
The eligibility of individuals arrested or released on bail in cases involving attempted murder and other serious offences will also be examined under the proposed scrutiny mechanism.
Meanwhile, the existing administrative setup in the province has reportedly begun preliminary arrangements for holding local government elections. Relevant departments are working on administrative and logistical matters to facilitate the electoral process.
The political and electoral situation is expected to become clearer following the Election Commission’s formal announcement of the election schedule.
The upcoming local government elections are expected to be closely watched as political parties and independent candidates prepare to contest for representation at the grassroots level across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
