US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that allowing Iran to control the Strait of Hormuz would create a “dangerous precedent” with consequences extending far beyond the Middle East.*
Speaking to Southeast Asian foreign ministers at an ASEAN meeting on Wednesday, Rubio said Iranian dominance over the strategic waterway would pose a serious threat to global security and international trade.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, through which a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports pass each day.
Rubio’s remarks come amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, with growing concerns over regional security and the safety of commercial shipping in the Gulf.
The US has repeatedly stressed its commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait, warning that any disruption could have far-reaching economic and geopolitical consequences.
