TARANTO: History was made at the Mediterranean Games 2026 as the inaugural Baseball5 tournament officially began in Taranto, Italy, with Türkiye, Spain, France, and hosts Italy all opening their campaigns with impressive victories.
In Group B, Türkiye defeated Greece 7-0, 4-2, while Group A favourites Spain edged Tunisia 4-3, 3-2 in a closely contested encounter. WBSC Baseball5 World Cup bronze medallists France also made a commanding start, defeating Syria 15-0, 8-3.
Hosts Italy delighted the home crowd by overcoming Kosovo, whose participation marked the nation’s historic international Baseball5 debut, adding another milestone to the sport’s rapid global growth.
The group stage resumes on Thursday with eight more matches before the tournament moves into the knockout rounds on Friday, as teams continue their pursuit of the first-ever Mediterranean Games Baseball5 title.
