Cristiano Ronaldo could be on the verge of ending his international career with Portugal, with reports suggesting that the legendary forward is considering retirement from the national team following his dramatic departure from the squad.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain left the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday, just days after being left on the bench during Portugal’s 2–1 Nations League victory over Norway. The decision came shortly after head coach Jorge Jesus addressed Ronaldo’s situation at a press conference.
Ronaldo Leaves Portugal Camp
Ronaldo confirmed his departure through a statement on social media after speaking with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.
The Portugal star said he had decided to leave the camp following the coach’s press conference and his conversation with the federation president. He also said that, in time, he would explain to the Portuguese people the reasons behind his decision.
The Portuguese Football Federation subsequently confirmed that Ronaldo had left the team’s camp in Copenhagen. The federation did not provide a detailed explanation but said preparations for the upcoming matches would continue with the remaining squad.
Retirement Reports Emerge
Ronaldo’s sudden exit has immediately triggered reports that he could retire from international football.
Several reports have described his departure as potentially marking the end of his Portugal career, while others have focused on the uncertainty surrounding his future with the national team.
However, Ronaldo has not officially announced his retirement from Portugal. His statement did not say that he was permanently retiring, and the Portuguese Football Federation has also not announced an international retirement.
That means the retirement reports remain unconfirmed for now.
Tension With Jorge Jesus
The situation intensified after Jorge Jesus said Ronaldo was not expected to start Portugal’s upcoming Nations League match against Denmark.
Ronaldo had already been an unused substitute in the 2–1 win over Norway. Jesus denied that there was a major dispute between them and said Ronaldo had not refused to train. The Portuguese Football Federation nevertheless confirmed that Ronaldo did not participate in Wednesday’s team training before leaving the camp.
Jesus said Ronaldo had accepted that the coach would make the decision over whether he played, but the events that followed have raised further questions about their relationship.
For now, Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s camp, but retirement from international football remains a report rather than an officially confirmed decision.
Portugal will continue its Nations League campaign without Ronaldo for the upcoming Denmark fixture, while football fans await the explanation the Portugal captain has promised
