Cristian “Cuti” Romero is set to begin a new chapter in Spain after leaving Tottenham Hotspur to join Atlético Madrid in a major summer transfer.

The Argentine defender confirmed his departure from Tottenham on August 14, bringing an end to a five-year spell in North London. Reports indicate that Atlético Madrid have agreed a deal worth around €40 million, including add-ons, for the centre-back.

Romero Says Goodbye to Tottenham

Romero joined Tottenham in 2021, initially on loan from Atalanta before making his move permanent in 2022. During his time with the club, he established himself as one of Tottenham’s most important defenders and later became club captain.

His biggest achievement with Spurs came during the 2024-25 season, when Tottenham won the UEFA Europa League. Romero played a key role in the successful campaign and was named the competition’s Player of the Season.

In his farewell message, Romero expressed his gratitude to Tottenham, his teammates, coaches, staff and supporters after five years at the club.

Atlético Madrid Move

Atlético Madrid have identified Romero as an important addition to their defence, with head coach Diego Simeone particularly interested in his leadership, physicality and aggressive defensive style.

The transfer is reportedly worth €35 million up front plus €5 million in potential bonuses, taking the total value close to €40 million. Romero is expected to sign a long-term contract with Atlético, with reports indicating a deal running until 2031.

The move also gives Romero the opportunity to play in LaLiga and work under fellow Argentine Simeone, whose defensive philosophy could suit the centre-back’s style.

A New Defensive Leader

Atlético have been working to strengthen their defence after conceding 81 goals in 61 matches last season, according to reports. Romero’s experience at the highest level could provide the club with additional leadership and defensive strength.

The 28-year-old arrives with considerable international experience as well. He has been an important member of Argentina’s national team and helped the country win major international titles, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

His arrival is therefore expected to be one of Atlético Madrid’s significant moves of the 2026 summer transfer window.

What Romero Brings to Atlético

Romero is known for his aggressive tackling, strong aerial ability, physical presence and confidence when bringing the ball out from defence. His leadership experience as Tottenham captain could also become valuable for Atlético.

There are some concerns over his injury record, with reports noting that he has missed a significant number of matches during his Tottenham career. Atlético will hope he can remain fit and consistently available throughout the new season.

With Romero now heading to Madrid, Atlético supporters will be expecting the Argentine defender to become an important figure in Simeone’s defensive system.
