ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s external debt has nearly doubled over the past decade, exceeding $135 billion, according to a World Bank report, highlighting the country’s growing reliance on foreign borrowing.
It further reveals that loans from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have collectively exceeded $36 billion, making multilateral institutions a major source of external financing for Pakistan.
The figures reflect a significant increase in Pakistan’s external debt over the last ten years, raising concerns about the country’s growing debt obligations and long-term financial sustainability.
The rising debt burden also underscores the challenges facing Pakistan’s economy, including debt servicing requirements, foreign exchange pressures and the need to strengthen exports and revenue generation.
The report’s findings highlight the importance of effective debt management, economic reforms and sustainable financial policies to reduce dependence on external borrowing.
