NEW YORK: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that no power can destroy Iran, stressing that the country’s deep historical roots have enabled its people to withstand decades of pressure.
Pezeshkian made the remarks while speaking to Iranian journalists in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, in response to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump concerning Iran.
The Iranian president accused Washington of pursuing what he described as a force-based approach in different parts of the world, arguing that such actions were incompatible with international law and humanitarian principles.
Pezeshkian referred to U.S. policies involving Venezuela, Cuba and Greenland, saying that Washington’s approach had become increasingly explicit, including discussion of the destruction of a country.
“Iran has deep historical roots and cannot be destroyed,” Pezeshkian said, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA.
He added that the Iranian people had remained resilient despite the pressure they had faced.
Pezeshkian Rejects Pressure
The comments came after Trump warned during his address to the UN General Assembly that he could “annihilate” Iran if an agreement to end the conflict was not reached.
In his own UN address, Pezeshkian rejected what he described as a language of force and said Iran would not surrender to pressure. At the same time, he indicated that Tehran remained open to negotiations to resolve tensions with Washington.
The exchange comes as diplomatic efforts continue in New York, although Iranian and U.S. officials remain far apart on the terms of ending the conflict.(IRNA)
Pezeshkian’s latest comments underline Tehran’s position that pressure and threats will not force Iran to abandon its position, while diplomatic channels remain open amid continuing tensions between the two countries.
