At least two people were killed and 11 others injured after a US strike hit the Shalamcheh border crossing between Iran and Iraq early Thursday, according to Iran’s Mehr News Agency.
Valiollah Hayati, deputy governor for security and law enforcement in Khuzestan province, said the area near the passenger terminal at the crossing was targeted. He also confirmed that a separate US missile strike hit an area near the city of Andimeshk in Khuzestan, with additional details expected later.
The attacks come amid ongoing US military operations across southwestern and southern Iran. US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes are aimed at reducing Iran’s ability to threaten civilian shipping and commercial vessels in regional waters.
The latest escalation follows a week of continued exchanges between the US and Iran. Tehran has responded with strikes on facilities and bases it says are linked to the US military across the region.
The renewed hostilities persist despite a Pakistan-brokered framework agreement signed by both countries in June, which was intended to end the conflict that began in February and lay the foundation for a lasting peace agreement.
