England manager Thomas Tuchel says his squad are still carrying the emotional “scars” of their dramatic World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, insisting the painful loss has exposed the gap that still separates England from the world’s top footballing nations.
England appeared destined for their first World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon’s opener, but late goals from Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez turned the match around, leaving Tuchel’s side devastated.
Speaking ahead of the third-place play-off against France, Tuchel described the defeat as a “scar” the team must carry, while stressing that England remain determined to improve. He acknowledged that teams such as Argentina, Spain and France currently possess a winning mentality and tournament experience that England are still striving to match.
The German coach also defended his tactical decisions, which have drawn criticism following the semi-final, saying he has no regrets and acted according to the demands of the match. Tuchel believes England’s World Cup campaign has laid the foundation for future success, with attention already turning towards the home UEFA Euro 2028 tournament.
England will now face France in the third-place play-off, hoping to finish the tournament on a positive note and secure their best World Cup placing since lifting the trophy in 1966.
