North Korea has tested a newly designed air defence missile system and conducted a strike exercise using a long-range strategic cruise missile, according to the country’s state media.
Arab media reports, citing North Korean state media, said both military exercises were conducted on Wednesday to improve the technical capabilities, performance and combat reliability of the country’s weapons systems.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test of the newly designed air defence missile system focused on evaluating target detection, surveillance and the performance of its advanced missile guidance system. North Korean authorities described the test as successful.
In a separate exercise in eastern North Korea, a long-range strategic cruise missile was launched towards a simulated airfield. The missile unit reportedly struck its designated target successfully.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s military said it had detected multiple missile launches from the Sondok area of North Korea on Wednesday, with the projectiles heading towards the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.
The latest developments come as North Korea has intensified its weapons testing activities in recent weeks. The country has reportedly conducted tests involving cluster munitions, attack drones, advanced torpedo systems and hypersonic missiles.
Military tensions also remain high amid strained relations between North Korea and the United States and South Korea.
The latest missile activities are likely to draw further attention to regional security concerns and the growing military capabilities of Pyongyang.
