ISLAMABAD (Economy Desk): Pakistan’s economy is showing signs of recovery, with the World Bank acknowledging progress in economic stabilisation, fiscal discipline and structural reforms, as the country’s economic growth rate increased to 3.7% in fiscal year 2026 from 3.2% in the previous year.

According to the latest Pakistan Development Update, Pakistan has made progress in restoring macroeconomic stability, strengthening public finances and advancing key structural reforms despite ongoing global and regional challenges.

The report highlighted improvements in the country’s fiscal position, noting that Pakistan’s primary fiscal surplus reached 2.9% of gross domestic product (GDP). Increased remittances also helped strengthen foreign exchange reserves and support external stability.

The World Bank further recognised progress in reforms across the energy sector, privatisation and trade policy, identifying these areas as important to improving economic efficiency and strengthening the country’s long-term growth prospects.

World Bank Sees Potential for Faster Growth

Looking ahead, the World Bank said Pakistan has the potential to raise its annual economic growth rate to between 6.2% and 6.9% through sustained and effective reforms, greater private-sector investment and stronger institutions.

The report also pointed to the possibility of a significant increase in per capita income by 2050, provided the country maintains a consistent reform agenda and creates an environment conducive to investment and productivity growth.

Reforms Remain Key to Sustainable Recovery

While the improvement in growth and fiscal indicators signals progress, sustaining the recovery will require continued efforts to address structural economic challenges.

Strengthening institutions, attracting private investment, improving energy-sector performance and maintaining fiscal discipline will be essential to translating recent gains into long-term economic development.

The World Bank’s assessment highlights both the progress achieved and the opportunities ahead, suggesting that consistent policy implementation and structural reforms could help Pakistan move towards stronger, more inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
