MILAN: Protests have intensified in several Italian cities in recent days, with clashes reported between police and demonstrators in Milan as tensions grew over the rising cost of living, public services and other economic and social concerns.
In Milan, demonstrations in the historic Piazza Duomo area turned confrontational, with some protesters reportedly damaging shops, setting fires and throwing objects at police. Authorities used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds.
The protests have been driven by concerns over inflation, rising living costs and dissatisfaction with public services. Students have also staged demonstrations in several cities, raising concerns about problems facing educational institutions, calling for increased funding for education and criticizing government spending on military and war-related activities.
Tensions were also reported in Turin and Bologna, where demonstrations led to confrontations and disruptions.
More than 200 people have reportedly been arrested during the unrest that began in Milan on Saturday. However, figures regarding arrests and detentions vary among different reports.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called a government security meeting to review the situation and discuss measures to restore public order.
The mayor of Milan has also condemned the violence and damage to public property, while authorities are focusing on restoring calm and preventing further incidents.
