An Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesperson has described the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye as an effective step toward strengthening regional security through cooperation among countries in the region.

“In our view, the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement concluded between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Türkiye is an effective step toward providing security by the regional countries themselves and cutting off the hands of foreigners,” the spokesperson said.

The comments come after Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on August 7, 2026. The agreement states that an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all three.

Focus on Regional Security

The IRGC spokesperson’s remarks emphasize Tehran’s stated preference for regional countries taking greater responsibility for security arrangements rather than relying on outside powers.

The agreement itself has been presented by its signatories as a framework for strengthening collective security, defence cooperation and regional stability. Pakistani and Turkish officials have also said the pact is defensive in nature and is not directed against a particular country.

Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan previously said the agreement does not identify Iran or another country as a common threat. He also said the framework could potentially expand to include other countries in the region.

Agreement Could Shape Regional Security Cooperation

The three-way agreement has emerged as part of wider discussions about how regional countries can develop their own security mechanisms amid continuing tensions in the Middle East.

The pact is intended to deepen defence cooperation among Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye, while its practical implementation and the precise mechanisms for responding to future security crises are still being developed.

The IRGC spokesperson’s comments indicate that Tehran views greater regional involvement in security matters as significant, particularly in the context of ongoing debate over the role of external powers in the Middle East.
