The United States and Iran have traded fresh attacks on vessels, further escalating tensions amid the ongoing conflict and a standoff over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command said American forces destroyed or disabled three Iranian oil tankers after what it described as failed Iranian missile attacks targeting U.S. Navy warships.
CENTCOM said the vessels were linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and alleged they were part of a network used to finance the IRGC and its regional proxies.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said their forces targeted an American aircraft carrier and a destroyer with several ballistic missiles, claiming the U.S. vessels were forced to retreat after sustaining damage.
Iran also claimed Sunday that its forces attacked a U.S. naval drone trying to enter the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest clashes come as Washington maintains pressure on Tehran through a counter-blockade of Iranian ports and additional sanctions aimed at restricting Iran’s economy.
The escalation has also raised further concerns over security and maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies.
